Indonesia University Public Discussion and Photo Exhibition
In an effort to garner more support and understanding among Indonesians, especially university students and staff, the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Myanmar Caucus (AIPMC), are working with universities in carrying out awareness programmes on the political and human rights situation in Burma.
Supporting this effort, via attendance and speeches, are Members of Parliament from Indonesia, known figures from politics and academia as well as activists.
The exhibition comprises of images depicting the situation faced by political and human rights activists in Burma – many of whom are tortured and/or killed.
Below are brief reports of the events at the universities.
University of Indonesia, October 16, 2008 – University of Indonesia, October 16, 2008 – AIPMC worked with Center for Global Civil Society Studies (PACIVIS) in conducting public discussion and photo exhibition at the university which is located in Depok. The event was opened by the British High Commissioner, Martin Hartfull.
Airlangga University, November 11, 2008 – AIPMC worked with the Department of International Relation, Airlangga University, in conducting a public discussion and photo exhibition at the university which is located in Surabaya. 70 people participated in the discussion and many others visited the three-day exhibition. The university also conducted a movie screening on Burma which was followed by a discussion. Around 40 students attended the movie screening
Gadjah Mada University, November 17, 2008 – AIPMC worked with the Globalization Study Group (LSG) in conducting a public discussion and photo exhibition in Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta. Prof. Dr. Amien Rais delivered the opening remarks at the event. Approximately 100 people attended the seminar and visited the exhibition. Local media were also present and covered the event.
Brawijaya University, December 10, 2008 – AIPMC worked with the Faculty of Social and Politic, Brawijaya University, in conducting public discussion and photo exhibition at the university in Malang. Around 100 people patronised the discussion and exhibition while at least in three local media agencies covered the event.
